The Brain's "Like" Button: How We Decide What We Prefer
Neural Mechanism of Preference Judgment
Using fMRI, this study tracked which brain regions compute value the instant we glance at a face or object and decide whether we like it. As participants rated their preferences for a range of stimuli, regions including the orbitofrontal cortex were found to encode the subjective value of each item in real time. Notably, the nucleus accumbens and orbitofrontal cortex were engaged at distinct moments: the accumbens responded immediately upon first seeing a preferred face, independent of attention, while the orbitofrontal cortex responded just before the conscious choice was made — revealing a clear functional dissociation between the two regions. This work became the foundation for the lab's entire subsequent line of preference and decision-making research.

Comparing Apples and Oranges: The Brain's Common Currency
Neural Correlates of Common Currency
How can the brain compare fundamentally different rewards — money, food, social approval — on a single scale? This study identified the neural mechanism that converts these heterogeneous rewards into one common currency of value. In particular, it found that value signals for two qualitatively different rewards, money and juice, were jointly encoded in an overlapping region of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), identifying this region as a key candidate for a common value scale that operates independent of reward type. By explaining how such incommensurable options become comparable, it supplied key evidence linking economic decision theory to neuroscience.

My Money, Your Money: The Brain Takes Risks Differently
Dissociable Neural Systems Underlying Risky Decisions for Self vs. Other
Even when the risky choice itself is identical, the neural systems engaged differ depending on whether the decision is for oneself or made on behalf of someone else. When participants' choices followed a Self Model of risk-taking, the amygdala responded more strongly; when choices followed an Other Model — risk-taking on behalf of someone else — the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) responded more strongly instead, revealing a double dissociation between the two regions. By showing that self-directed and other-directed risk-taking are tracked by the amygdala and DMPFC respectively as dissociable neural circuits, this study laid neuroscientific groundwork for the study of surrogate decision-making.

The Selfish Brain, The Generous Brain: A Value Map Written Across the Prefrontal Cortex
Spatial Gradient in Value Representation Along the Medial Prefrontal Cortex Reflects Individual Differences in Prosociality
How do selfish and prosocial brains differ in the way they value another person's welfare? In this study, participants underwent brain imaging while performing a learning task in which they could earn rewards for themselves, for another person, or for both. Behaviorally, participants valued the other person's welfare too, though less than their own. Neural data revealed a clear spatial gradient within the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC): more ventral regions predominantly represented self-regarding value, while more dorsal regions predominantly represented other-regarding value. Critically, selfish individuals showed a sharper separation between these ventral (self) and dorsal (other) regions, whereas prosocial individuals showed self- and other-regarding value signals already overlapping in the ventral MPFC, with a more gradual ventral-to-dorsal transition. Prosocial individuals also showed stronger functional coupling between the MPFC and the striatum specifically when making and updating choices on behalf of another person. This study provides a concrete neural marker that helps explain individual differences in human prosociality.

The Power of First Impressions: When a Face Tips the Scales
Neural Basis of Decision Biases due to Facial Impression
A first impression forms from a face in a few hundred milliseconds — and this study shows it can go on to bias completely unrelated decisions. Participants performed an economic decision task, deciding whether to accept or reject monetary offers, each paired with a proposer's face varying in trustworthiness. For the very same offer amount, pairing it with a high-trustworthiness face systematically raised the probability of acceptance, while pairing it with a low-trustworthiness face lowered it. This trustworthiness-driven bias was systematically tracked by activity in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex. The findings trace a concrete neural pathway through which facial cues like trustworthiness and attractiveness seep into subsequent judgments, demonstrating that first impressions are not a fleeting cognitive afterimage but an active force shaping real choices.

Mind-Reading 101: The Neural Signature of Guessing What Others Want
Neural Markers of Ability to Estimate Other's Preferences
Some people are simply better at guessing what others will like. This study identified neural markers that predict such individual differences in interpersonal sensitivity. Participants viewed a photo of another person's face and estimated how much that person would like a subsequently shown item (e.g., a hamburger), then rated their own preference for the same item. The degree to which activity in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) was greater when estimating another's preference than when judging one's own (Target − Self) correlated significantly and positively with how accurately participants could estimate others' preferences. In other words, the more strongly participants shifted from their own perspective to another's, as indexed by this DMPFC difference, the more accurate their mind-reading became — offering a concrete neuroscientific handle on individual differences in empathic ability.

A Neural Fingerprint for How Well We Read Other Minds
Neural Representations in mPFC and Insula Encode Individual Differences in Estimating Others' Preferences
Successful social interactions often hinge on the ability to accurately estimate others' perspectives by integrating contextual cues. Using a preference estimation task, this study investigated the neural mechanisms behind this capacity. Participants viewed a target person's face and predicted how much that person would like a given item, and estimation accuracy was calculated as the percentage of guesses matching the target's actual preference on a 4-point Likert scale. Applying inter-subject representational similarity analysis (IS-RSA), the researchers found that multi-voxel activity patterns in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and anterior insula (AI) predicted individual differences in preference-estimation accuracy. In other words, participants' varying behavioral tendencies in inferring others' preferences were mirrored in the multivariate neural representations of these two regions — both known for their roles in individual differences in interoception and in the context-dependent interpretation of ambiguous facial emotion. The findings suggest that the mPFC and AI play pivotal roles in accurately estimating others' preferences from minimal information, offering insights that go beyond what traditional univariate approaches could capture.

The Accepter, the Rejecter, and the Three Circuits That Build a First Impression
Distinctive Roles of mPFC Subregions in Forming Impressions and Guiding Social Interaction Based on Others' Social Behaviour
We form impressions of others almost instantly from their social behavior, and those impressions go on to shape how we interact with them later. This study examined how the type and timing of another person's social decisions affect impression formation and subsequent social interaction. On each trial, participants watched how a responder reacted to an unfair offer in an ultimatum game, then decided whether to choose that responder as their partner for an upcoming game — either as proposer or as responder — and rated how warm, competent, and likable the person seemed. Participants strategically preferred responders who had accepted unfair offers ("accepters") as their partner when they themselves would be the responder, and preferred those who had rejected unfair offers ("rejecters") as their partner when they themselves would be the proposer. Activity in the rostral medial prefrontal cortex (rmPFC) tracked this strategic, role-dependent valuation during partner choice. Meanwhile, slow rejecters were perceived as warmer than fast rejecters — a pattern mirrored in the anterior mid-cingulate cortex (aMCC) while participants watched others' decisions, suggesting this region may help detect and resolve conflicting impressions. Finally, participants who perceived accepters as warmer than rejecters showed a correspondingly stronger ventral mPFC response to accepters over rejecters at the moment of choosing a partner, regardless of context. This study shows that distinct mPFC subregions play different roles in forming impressions of others and in guiding subsequent social interactions based on their behavior.

Keeping Up with the Joneses: Why Social Comparison Differs by Person and Culture
Neural Evidence for Individual and Cultural Variability of Social Comparison
How the brain responds when we judge "how am I doing compared to others" turns out to vary both across individuals and across cultures. When Korean and American participants were shown both their absolute income and their income relative to others, the ventral striatum — a region central to reward processing — showed a crossover pattern: it responded more strongly to relative income in Korean participants but more strongly to absolute income in American participants. A parallel cultural difference emerged in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC): American participants' vmPFC activity swung more sharply with gains and losses in absolute income, whereas Korean participants' vmPFC activity swung more sharply with gains and losses in relative income — a double dissociation between the two groups. Together, these findings show that neural responses during social comparison differ systematically with both personal disposition and cultural background, reframing social comparison as a context-dependent process rather than a universal one.

When Resources Run Low, "Our Side" Beats Fairness
Ingroup Favoritism Overrides Fairness When Resources Are Limited
Ingroup favoritism and fairness are two potentially competing motives that guide how people behave toward other groups. This study examined whether — and how — limited resources shift the balance between these two motives. Participants decided whether to accept or reject computer-generated resource allocation proposals of three types: ones favoring their own group (ingroup), ones favoring the other group (outgroup), and neutral ones. Overall, participants were more willing to accept proposals favoring their ingroup than outgroup-favoring or neutral proposals, and were also more willing to accept proposals under moderate rather than extreme inequality — suggesting people carefully balance ingroup favoritism against fairness, though there were also marked individual differences in which motive people leaned toward. Critically, participants showed stronger ingroup favoritism specifically when limited resources meant the allocation outcome actually affected their ingroup members' well-being. In other words, when resources were plentiful, favoritism eased and fairness carried more weight — but as resources grew scarcer, prioritizing "our side" became more pronounced. This study offers new insight into how situational factors like resource scarcity interact with personality to drive the intergroup conflicts common throughout human societies.

When My Own Rank Is on the Line, Self-Interest Beats Fairness
Self-Interest Overrides Rank-Reversal Aversion in Resource Distribution
The equitable allocation of resources has long been a central human concern, driving extensive research into the motives behind distributive justice. Alongside the well-known motive of inequality aversion, researchers have proposed a competing motive: rank-reversal aversion — a reluctance to see the relative ranking between people change. Yet it remained unclear whether this aversion to rank reversal persists when one's own rank is directly at stake. Using a modified redistribution game with 55 online participants, this study tested for rank-reversal aversion in this first-party context and explored the diverse moral strategies people use. Participants could accept or reject various proposals that changed how resources were distributed among themselves and two other people (A and B). The results showed that rank-reversal aversion appeared clearly only when the participant's own rank stayed the same. When their own rank changed instead, participants tended to base their behavior on their new rank rather than trying to preserve their original one. This behavioral tendency varied considerably across individuals, revealing three distinct moral strategies, each incorporating rank-reversal considerations in its own way. The study shows that while rank-reversal aversion can genuinely shape how people distribute resources, its influence varies substantially between individuals — especially once their own rank is on the line — with implications for understanding distributive justice in political and economic domains as well.

Fairness is a cornerstone of social norms, emphasizing equal treatment and equitable distribution in interpersonal relationships. Unfair treatment often triggers direct retaliation, but it can also spread to entirely different third parties through a phenomenon known as pay-it-forward (PIF) reciprocity. This study examined how the propagation of unfairness differs depending on whether a new interaction partner holds higher, equal, or lower status than the participant. Korean participants (N = 47) received either fair or unfair treatment in a first dictator game (DG1), then allocated monetary resources among partners at various hierarchical levels in a second round (DG2). The central question was whether the severity of unfairness inflicted on these new partners depended on their hierarchical status. Despite having previously been treated unfairly themselves, participants tended to act more generously toward higher-status partners, while directing harsher treatment toward lower-status ones. The interaction between fairness experienced in DG1 and the hierarchical status of the DG2 partner was statistically significant, showing that the effect of prior unfair treatment on decision-making depended on the new partner's rank. These findings confirm that unfairness pay-it-forward reciprocity genuinely operates within hierarchical social contexts.

Written Into the Brain's Wiring: How Much We Compare Ourselves to Others
Intrinsic Functional and Structural Brain Connectivity in Humans Predicts Individual Social Comparison Orientation
Social comparison orientation (SCO) — the tendency to compare oneself with others — is universal, yet it varies widely from person to person and predicts important life and health outcomes. Still, the neural mechanisms behind these individual differences have remained poorly understood. Using a multimodal approach that combined diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state fMRI in 42 healthy young adults, this study looked for intrinsic neural markers of SCO in the brain at rest, without any task being performed. Higher SCO was associated with weaker structural and functional connectivity between the ventral striatum and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) — two core regions of the brain's reward network. Individual SCO was also negatively associated with neural fluctuations in the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), part of the frontoparietal network, and positively associated with functional connectivity between the IPS and an anterior insula/amygdala cluster. This pattern was further confirmed by an independent analysis of large-scale connectivity between the frontoparietal network and the cingulo-opercular network. Together, these findings provide novel evidence that the brain's intrinsic functional and structural wiring — present even at rest — is linked to individual differences in how much people compare themselves with others.

The Heart Behind Moral Conformity: How Body Signals Nudge Us Toward the Majority
Neural Processes Linking Interoception to Moral Preferences Aligned with Group Consensus
Interoception — how accurately we sense our own heartbeat — turns out to play a role in tilting moral judgments toward group consensus. Decomposing resting-state brain activity into dynamic brain states, including patterns related to the default mode network (DMN), and running a mediation analysis, the study found that people with higher interoceptive awareness spent more time in a brain state marked by heightened medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activity — a state linked to evaluation and judgment. Spending more time in this mPFC-driven state was, in turn, associated with spending less time in a separate brain state marked by markedly lowered precuneus activity — and spending less time in that low-precuneus state predicted a smaller "moral distance," meaning judgments falling closer to group consensus. In other words, interoception drives more time in the mPFC-centered evaluative state, which reduces time spent in the low-precuneus state, which in turn brings moral judgments closer to consensus — a dual-mediation pathway through which people who sense their bodily signals more sensitively tend to form moral preferences that align more closely with the majority. The mPFC and precuneus are both considered core hubs of the default mode network (DMN).

Cardiac Dynamics During Social Evaluative Feedback: Evidence from Intersubject Representational Similarity Analysis
When people receive social evaluative feedback, their heart-rate responses trace surprisingly similar patterns across different individuals. Wearing a wrist sensor to track their heartbeat, participants alternated between having their own artwork evaluated by a partner and evaluating the partner's artwork themselves, judging whether it was "creative" or "not creative." The researchers tracked how each participant's heart rate changed over time while being evaluated, to see which people showed similar heart-rate patterns to one another. They also looked at how similarly participants judged their partners' artwork. The key finding: people who behaved more similarly to one another — judging their partners in similar ways — also showed more similar heart-rate response patterns while being evaluated. This suggests that social evaluation isn't just something that happens in the mind; it's an experience that binds people together at the level of shared bodily responses, like the rhythm of a heartbeat.

Built by Others: Mapping the Brain's Blueprint for Social Self-Worth
Neural Signatures of Socially Shaped Self-Worth: A Meta-Analysis
Self-worth isn't formed in a vacuum — it's socially sculpted through our relationships with others. This meta-analysis synthesized existing neuroimaging studies across three representative situations in which social self-worth is shaped: ① self-appraisal (evaluating oneself), ② social feedback (receiving evaluation from others), and ③ social comparison (measuring oneself against others). It found that the rostromedial prefrontal cortex (rmPFC) was consistently and strongly engaged across all three situations, acting as a core hub for self-worth regardless of social context. In contrast, the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) were especially engaged during self-appraisal, while the striatum stood out most during social comparison — showing that the relative involvement of each region shifts with context. By revealing this structure of one shared core region working alongside context-specific supporting regions, the study distilled the neural pathway from social experience to self-worth into one integrated map.

Hurt in the Moment vs. Guarded by History: How Self-Protection Grows Up
Development of MPFC Function Mediates Shifts in Self-Protective Behavior Provoked by Social Feedback
People protect themselves in response to negative evaluation from others, and this study examined how that self-protective behavior changes with age — and which brain regions support that change — using a novel task in which participants reciprocally evaluated each other's artwork. Younger, adolescent participants showed self-protective bias based mainly on the single piece of negative feedback they had just received, whereas participants closer to adulthood increasingly showed self-protective bias based on the accumulated history of negative feedback they had received over time. Neuroimaging showed that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) mediated self-protective behavior driven by both immediate and accumulated feedback, while the rostromedial prefrontal cortex (RMPFC) exclusively mediated self-protective behavior driven by longer feedback history. Further analysis using a reinforcement-learning model showed that the RMPFC — extending into nearby VMPFC — together with the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), contributes to the age-related rise in deeply history-informed self-protection by computing the discrepancy between current feedback and a previously estimated value of self-protection. Together, these findings indicate that the development of RMPFC function is critical for more sophisticated, history-informed self-protective decision-making.

Stability or Plasticity? – A Hierarchical Allostatic Regulation Model of Medial Prefrontal Cortex Function for Social Valuation
The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has long been recognized as a key hub in the neurocircuitry underlying both social and non-social behavior, yet there has been no integrative account of the organizing principle behind its functionally distinct subregions. Drawing on findings from the lab's own research program, this theoretical paper proposes a hierarchical model in which three functionally dissociable mPFC subregions — the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), rostromedial prefrontal cortex (rmPFC), and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) — compute different levels of decision value within a single hierarchy. According to the model, more dorsal regions draw more heavily on external sensory information from the environment to predict and pre-empt conflicts that would otherwise arise in more ventral regions, which are tuned to internal bodily signals. Through this arrangement, the mPFC as a whole functions as a hierarchically organized system of allostatic regulatory control over homeostatic reflexes. The model also highlights the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) as playing a key role in arbitrating transitions between different thalamo-cortical loops, detecting conflicts between competing decision options, and flexibly shifting between different modes of decision-making. Working together with the TRN, this hierarchical mPFC architecture may help the brain better align internal (bodily) needs with the constraints of the external (environmental) world — offering a way to effectively resolve the fundamental stability–plasticity dilemma.

The Leader's Dilemma: When the Brain Strategically Bends to Hierarchy
Navigating Leadership Dilemmas: Neural Bases of Strategic Conformity to Social Hierarchy
Leaders sometimes strategically conform to organizational hierarchy even when it conflicts with their own convictions, and this study uncovered the neural mechanisms behind that strategic conformity. Looking at how brain activity patterns differed depending on whether a leader was relationship-oriented or goal-oriented, the researchers found that in public situations (when others were watching), the rostromedial prefrontal cortex (rmPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (pACC) tracked leadership style, while in private situations (when alone), the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) took over that role. In other words, the brain routed leadership-style information through different regions depending on who was watching. Beyond this, relationship-oriented leaders showed stronger connectivity between the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and the rmPFC, suggesting that relationship-oriented leaders more tightly link value judgments that factor in others (vmPFC) with the processing of social context (rmPFC). A closer look at the dmPFC revealed something else notable: the more strongly goal-oriented a leader was, the more active this region became, and specifically, goal-oriented leaders showed even greater dmPFC activity when no one was watching than when they were being observed — whereas relationship-oriented leaders showed almost no difference between public and private situations. This suggests that for goal-oriented leaders, self-interested, goal-focused judgment kicks in more strongly precisely when there's no one around to see it. Together, these findings show that decisions made under leadership dilemmas are not simple capitulation, but calculated judgments that weigh both whether one is being observed and one's own relationship orientation.

People often align their behavior with the expectations of someone in a higher social position, especially when they are being watched. This study had participants rate their preferences for novel stimuli while the researchers manipulated the social standing of a partner (superior or inferior) and whether the participant was being observed (public or private), to examine the neural basis of conforming to hierarchy. Behaviorally, participants were more likely to shift their preferences to match a superior partner's in public than in private. Neuroimaging showed that three subregions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) each played a distinct role. The ventral mPFC became more active whenever a participant's preference happened to align with a superior partner's, regardless of whether they actually changed their behavior. The rostral mPFC became more active specifically when participants conformed to a superior partner while not conforming to an inferior one — tracking value in a goal-directed way, geared toward maintaining status. The dorsal mPFC became more active in private situations with a superior partner, but only among participants with a stronger overall tendency to conform. These findings support a model in which the mPFC is hierarchically organized to regulate social value, and suggest that strategic conformity may serve to minimize unnecessary social friction — and the metabolic cost that comes with it.

Social Observation Differentially Affects Prosocial Learning of Selfish and Prosocial People
Whether being watched boosts prosocial learning depends heavily on a person's baseline disposition. Using the Prosocial Reinforcement Learning Task (PRLT), this study examined how social observation interacts with individual differences in intrinsic prosocial tendency to shape prosocial learning. A total of 102 participants were randomly assigned to an observation or control group while performing a two-armed bandit task under self- and other-reward conditions, with behavior analyzed using a reinforcement learning computational model. Under social observation, participants who were previously less prosocial (more selfish) showed a marked increase in prosocial learning, whereas those who were already more prosocial showed no significant change, and only a small, non-significant numerical increase in learning for themselves. The findings reveal that social observation modulates prosociality and cognitive learning quite differently depending on a person's intrinsic prosocial tendency.

When allocating resources, people often face a choice between strict equality (splitting evenly) and merit-based equity (splitting by contribution). This study examined whether people use these distributive principles not only to be fair, but also strategically, as a way to manage the impression they make — appearing warm or appearing competent. In Experiment 1, participants' allocation choices differed depending on whether the evaluator watching them valued warmth or competence, though the evaluator's own choice was also tied to a monetary incentive, making it hard to isolate a pure impression-management motive. In Experiment 2, after removing the link between the evaluator's choice and monetary incentives, a similar but weaker descriptive pattern emerged, and the key statistical interaction was no longer statistically significant. This suggests that social-evaluative orientation may influence allocation preferences, but this influence appears weaker without evaluator-linked monetary incentives and needs confirmation in more adequately powered studies. Exploratory analyses further hinted that individual differences in fear of negative evaluation and subjective interoceptive sensitivity might be preliminarily associated with variability in allocation choices across evaluator conditions — a tentative finding that also awaits replication. Together, these findings suggest that impression management can shape fairness-related decisions, while also underscoring the need for caution about the size and conditions of that effect.

Watched, We Become Principled: Reputation Concern and Moral Judgment
Social Observation Increases Deontological Judgments in Moral Dilemmas
A concern for positive reputation is one of the core motivations underlying many human social behaviors. This study examined how experimentally induced reputation concern shapes judgments in moral dilemmas, such as classic trolley-type scenarios. Participants were randomly assigned to respond to a series of moral dilemmas either in the presence of observers ("observed" group) or alone ("control" group). Although the two groups showed no baseline differences in personality traits or general moral-judgment tendencies, participants in the observed group made more deontological judgments — favoring principle over outcome — specifically for "personal" dilemmas involving direct bodily harm to another person. This came with an overall decrease in decision confidence and a significant lengthening of response time. Moreover, in a word-judgment task that followed the moral dilemma task, only participants in the observed group showed heightened sensitivity to words related to warmth, relative to words related to competence. These findings suggest that the presence of potentially judgmental others can trigger reputation concern, which in turn activates a culturally valued norm of warmth — setting off a goal-directed process of presenting oneself as warm and principled that ultimately increases deontological judgment in moral dilemmas.

Social Observation Increases Functional Segregation between MPFC Subregions Predicting Prosocial Consumer Decisions
While it is well established that being observed by others can be a powerful driver of prosocial behavior, the underlying neural mechanism has remained largely unexplored. This fMRI study first replicated the well-known observer effect in ethical consumption: participants were more likely to purchase "social products" — sold to support people in need — over ordinary, non-social products when they were being observed. Neuroimaging revealed that, under observation, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) took on distinct roles, encoding individual-specific value for purchase decisions about social products and non-social products, respectively. The ACC also showed stronger functional coupling with the amygdala and anterior insula specifically when observed participants purchased social products rather than non-social ones. Finally, activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) predicted faster response times and greater prosocial purchasing — favoring social over non-social products — regardless of whether participants were being observed. Together, these findings suggest that three mPFC subregions — the dmPFC, ACC, and vmPFC — are hierarchically organized to encode different levels of decision value, ranging from context-sensitive reputational value to the value of internalized prosociality itself.

Downplay Myself, Upplay My Friend: The Brain Behind Impression Management
Roles of the MPFC and Insula in Impression Management Under Social Observation
People often engage in impression management, presenting themselves and others as socially desirable — yet the specific behaviors involved and their neural underpinnings had remained unclear. This study investigated the neural mechanisms of impression management during self- and friend-evaluation tasks. Only participants in the observation (OBS) group were told in advance that their responses would be monitored by others; participants rated how well positive and negative trait adjectives described themselves or a friend. Behaviorally, the OBS group was more likely than the control (CON) group to reject negative traits when evaluating themselves and to accept positive traits when evaluating a friend. A separate validation study confirmed that this pattern — downplaying one's own negative traits while playing up a friend's positive traits — actually helps create a good impression. In parallel with this behavioral pattern, neuroimaging showed that, relative to the CON group, the OBS group's rostromedial prefrontal cortex (rmPFC) and anterior insula (AI) activity increased more sharply as the negativity of negative adjectives increased during self-evaluation, and increased more sharply as the positivity of positive adjectives increased during friend-evaluation. This study demonstrates that the rmPFC and AI play a critical role in impression management, steering evaluations toward socially desirable outcomes under social observation.

Stressed Into Kindness: The Hidden Cost to Self-Reward
Social Stress and Intuitive Prosocial Behavior: Effects on Self-Reward Processing
In this study, male participants decided how to allocate monetary rewards to people at varying social distances after completing a social stress task. Participants who showed elevated cortisol (a stress hormone) following the stress task were more likely to choose a "disadvantageous unequal" option — accepting less for themselves in order to give more to the other person, a self-sacrificing, intuitively prosocial choice. Neuroimaging revealed an opposing pattern behind this: participants who more often made this self-sacrificing choice showed stronger encoding of the other person's reward in the ventral medial prefrontal cortex, while the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex showed weaker encoding — and mediation analyses confirmed that both regions' activity helped explain the link between cortisol and this self-sacrificing choice tendency. Cortisol was further found to act through two opposing pathways: exciting the dorsal mPFC via the ventral striatum while inhibiting it via the dorsal striatum. Together, these findings suggest that social stress disrupts deliberate, calculated decision-making while simultaneously boosting intuitive prosocial motivation, by finely tuning hierarchically organized cortico-striatal circuits in opposite directions.

Approach or Avoid? The Split-Second Social Instinct
Exploring Automatic Approach-Avoidance Tendencies: The Impact of Self-Relevant Social Feedback on Behavior
Confronted with a social stimulus, our bodies often lean toward or pull away before conscious thought catches up. Using a touchscreen-based task in which participants pulled a fish character toward themselves or pushed it away, this study examined whether self-relevant evaluative feedback from the fish — such as "You are kind" or "You are smart" — shaped these automatic bodily responses, even though the feedback was irrelevant to the task itself. A clear congruency effect emerged, in which responses were faster when valence (positive/negative) matched the required action (approach/avoidance) — and this effect was notably stronger for positive feedback than for negative feedback. Feedback that was rated as more socially desirable was also associated with faster approach responses and, conversely, slower avoidance responses. Individual differences mattered too: participants with a higher fear of negative evaluation showed slower approach responses overall — for both positive and negative feedback — compared to neutral feedback. The study demonstrates that social feedback about oneself can automatically trigger approach or avoidance tendencies before conscious deliberation, and lays the groundwork for using touchscreen-based approach-avoidance tasks to measure individual differences in sensitivity to social feedback.

Honesty & Deception
The Selfishness Hiding in a White Lie — Your Brain Already Knows
Neural Representation in mPFC Reveals Hidden Selfish Motivation in White Lies
"Pareto lies" — lies that benefit both the liar and the other person — are especially hard to interpret, because both selfish and altruistic motives can produce the exact same observable behavior. This study used a brain-fingerprinting approach to read out that hidden motivation from patterns of brain activity. By comparing multivoxel activity patterns in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) during selfish lies, altruistic lies, and Pareto lies, the researchers quantified, for each person, how closely their Pareto-lie brain pattern resembled their selfish-lie pattern versus their altruistic-lie pattern. Stronger selfish motivation during Pareto lies was associated with higher average activity in both the ventral mPFC and the rostral mPFC — but the two regions captured this in different ways. The ventral mPFC reflected selfish motivation through increased pattern similarity to selfish lies, while the rostral mPFC reflected it through decreased pattern similarity to altruistic lies. Notably, higher ventral mPFC pattern similarity also predicted faster response times when deciding to tell a Pareto lie, suggesting that stronger selfish motivation made the decision more immediate. Altogether, the study showed that the selfish motivation hidden inside an outwardly indistinguishable "white lie" can be revealed through neural representations in the mPFC.
